| Henry T. Welka & Associates is possibly
the least known group of artists in northwestern Pennsylvania. As a quiet
presence underlying every view and vantage point in Erie and the surrounding
municpalities, Welka defines and sculpts the land through the art of surveying
and engineering. With talented people, computerization and commitment,
Welka has literally put Erie on the map.
The firm was started in 1969 by Henry T. Welka, and his first employee was his brother, George Welka. Together, they provided quality surveying for residential, commercial and institutional customers in Erie. Henry had a passion for Erie, and not surprisingly, one of his early, significant jobs was the remonumentation of downtown Erie. The Project was a success, and customers have placed similar trust in Welka & Associates ever since. Henry died in 1991, but not before leaving a surveyor's legacy to the next generation. The business is still owned and run by the family and continues to provide quality surveying to the same customer base. As anyone will tell you, whether outin the field or in the office - Henry's presence is strongly felt. James T. Welka, P.E./P.L.S., has taken the lead. Joining his father in 1981 after graduating from Penn State University, Jim became a registered professional land surveyor and registered professional engineer. His brother, Mark, is operations manager, and his sister, Marcia, is office manager overseeing the firm's accounting. Nancy, Henry's wife, is a large part of the heart of the business. And George is still active in the field. Welka & Associates originated with two men and is now a team of 30 including four, fully equipped field survey crews, two professional engineers, three professional land surveyors, engineers-in-training, surveyors-in-training, draftspersons and support personnel. As the firm grew and absorbed other surveying offices, it acquired documents dating back to the 1800s - information which no one else owns. These archives are a rich resource for regional surveying data. A recent expansion of the company's offices houses eight computer stations and provides enough room to grow with the community. To work with Welka & Associates is easy - simply call. When your buying land a survey is invaluable. It assures the location of property boundaries and the accuracy and wording of legal descriptions. There are other situations that call for surveying: land division, whether by land contract, will, deed, court order or desire; land improvement, such as buildings, road, fences or lakes; and boundary disputes or timber removal. Within days, residential surveys are completed, and within hours, major commercial or institutional projects appear on the schedule. With radio dispatching of crews, on-site crises are assesed and solved quickly. Upper Peach Street showcases the firm's surveying and engineering expertise for business including Damon's, Applebee's, Cinemark, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Lowes Plaza and Summit Town Center. To the northwest is the new Wegman's on 26th Street, and to the south, the compilcated Lakeview Landfill. Each site reflects the work of Welka & Associates.
